Monlau Motul Technical School concluded its participation in the 2016 Spanish Winter Championship this past weekend at MotorLand Aragón, the venue for the third and final round of the winter series. In a championship marked by intense competition – with 31 cars on the track and minimal differences between drivers – the Barcelona-based team completed a solid weekend, culminating in Miki Blascos’ fifth-place finish in the final race, third among the rookies .
The action began on Friday with two free practice sessions in which the team worked on fine-tuning the cars. Saturday started with the first qualifying session, which was marked by rain that fell overnight and into the early morning, leaving the track wet. In these conditions, the Monlau Motul engineers made the crucial decision to opt for rain tires. The strategy proved successful and allowed all three drivers to achieve strong positions: Fausto Arnaudo was seventh with a time of 2:16.139, Miki Blascos 10th (2:16.393), and Rahim Alibhai 13th (2:16.595).
The first race of the weekend saw a spectacular start from Arnaudo. The Argentinian made several overtakes and positioned himself in contention for a top-five finish, but while battling within that group, he suffered an incident with another competitor that forced him to retire. Blascos also showed great pace in the early stages and, while fighting for a top-ten finish, was pushed off the track by another driver, forcing him to retire. Meanwhile, Alibhai, who despite qualifying 13th started from pit lane due to a penalty, completed a remarkable comeback to finish 14th.
In Saturday’s sprint race, Blascos started from third place and defended his position at the start to stay with the leading group. However, after a safety car period , a rival hit him, taking him out of contention once again. Arnaudo was also running at the front, but while trying to avoid his teammate, he went off the track and lost several positions, finishing 22nd. Alibhai, who again had to start from pit lane due to a carried-over penalty, staged another comeback to finish 15th.
Sunday dawned cold and windy at the Alcañiz circuit. In the second qualifying session, Blascos delivered an outstanding performance, setting the fifth fastest time with a lap of 2:00.267, just 0.617 seconds off pole position . Alibhai was 16th (2:01.129), while Arnaudo finished 23rd (2:01.963).
The final race of the championship confirmed the team’s strong performance. Blascos delivered a brilliant showing, maintaining his position at the front throughout the race and firmly defending his position in the closing laps to cross the finish line in fifth place (third among the rookies). This result earned the Mallorcan driver 10 points and propelled him to 16th place in the championship standings.
Arnaudo, for his part, started 25th due to a penalty imposed on Saturday, forcing him to fight his way back through the field. The Argentinian steadily climbed the ranks to finish in a commendable 11th place. Alibhai also showed competitive pace and remained competitive, although a collision with another driver prematurely ended his race.
With the points achieved by Blascos at MotorLand Aragón, added to those of Arnaudo at the Madrid Jarama Circuit – RACE, Monlau Motul concludes the Spanish Winter Championship 2026 in seventh position in the team classification, a result that reflects the progress shown by the team throughout the championship and the intense work carried out by drivers, engineers and mechanics during these weeks of competition.
David Simón , team manager of Monlau Motul Technical School, gave a positive assessment of the weekend: “We are very happy with the performance shown in Alcañiz. Our engineers made some excellent decisions, especially in the first qualifying session with the choice of rain tires. The riders responded very well, and Miki’s result in the last race demonstrates the level we can reach when everything comes together. It is a reward for the great work of the mechanics and engineers during this preseason.”
Jaime Serrano , CEO of Monlau Motul Technical School, also highlighted the team’s progress: “The improvement since the first race of the championship has been evident. We have worked hard during these weeks, and the drivers have improved race after race. We are closing the winter championship with a positive feeling and the conviction that we are entering the start of the Spanish F4 season with a very solid foundation and everything ready to compete at the highest level.”
After completing the Spanish Winter Championship, which has served as a platform for preparation and learning, Monlau Motul is now looking ahead to the start of the regular season of the Spanish F4 Championship, which will take place from April 10 to 12 at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia.
