- The team’s three mainstays showed positive progress during the Navarra weekend, although their performances were marred by various race incidents.
- Alexander Jacoby, 15th in the third scoring round, achieved the best result of the event for the Barcelona team.
- “At Los Arcos, it was clear that we’ve made a leap forward compared to the Winter Series. We just need a bit more luck and better qualifying to avoid incidents in the race,” emphasized David Simón, Monlau Motul team manager.
- “We’re leaving with a bittersweet taste in our mouths, because the team’s drivers aren’t seeing a fair reward for the tremendous effort they’re putting in,” says Jaime Serrano, CEO of Monlau Motul.
Monlau Motul Technical School concluded its participation in the second round of the Spanish Formula 4 Championship, held in Navarra, with the team’s three drivers demonstrating improved speed, but without the expected rewards in the scoring races. Alexander Jacoby, 15th in Sunday’s round, achieved the best classification of the event for the team, which returns to base with the challenge of continuing to work to return to the top ten as soon as possible.
The Navarra Circuit welcomed the Spanish F4 team to changing weather conditions since collective practice and a revised layout with the addition of a small variation in its central section to improve overtaking. Despite this, the 31 entrants in this second round of the championship were fully aware of the importance of qualifying well.
The overall equality was evident from Q1, when Lorenzo Campos set the best time for a Monlau Motul car, 1:46.737, which was just 0.9 seconds off pole and 0.5 seconds off the top 10. This closeness to the weekend’s leaders did not allow him, however, to go further than 18th on the first grid, very close to his teammate Francisco Monarca (1:46.828), 20th. Alexander Jacoby was less fortunate, as due to an electronic problem he was unable to take part in the session, finding himself relegated to the back row of the grid.
The price of starting so far back is often very high, as the Monlau Motul drivers discovered in the first scoring race, held a few hours after Q1. Monarca, 22nd, was the only driver to see the checkered flag, while Campos and Jacoby were forced to retire due to various incidents.
On Sunday, the group’s performance improved in the second qualifying session, with Francisco Monarca finishing in a creditable 13th place (1:46.621). Lorenzo Campos completed the group in 21st (1:47.027) and Alexander Jacoby in 26th (1:47.289).
The second race repeated the pattern of the previous day, with double retirements for Campos and Monarca in the opening stages, and Alexander Jacoby managing to salvage 18th place. In the afternoon, in the final round of the weekend, the three representatives of the Monlau Motul Technical School took the checkered flag. Jacoby made a spectacular comeback from 26th on the grid to 15th. Lorenzo Campos finished 16th, while Francisco Monarca finished 22nd.
David Simón , team manager, commented on the weekend’s performance: “In Navarra, it was clear to us that we’ve made a leap forward compared to the Winter Series. The team has the potential to be further ahead, but we need a bit more luck and a better qualifying position to avoid incidents during the race.”
Jaime Serrano , CEO of Monlau Motul, added: “This meeting leaves us with a bittersweet aftertaste, because the team’s three drivers have shown progress, but they aren’t seeing the rewards of their great efforts. I’m confident that we’ll soon be able to reap the rewards of all this work, because the potential is there, and it’s great.”
The Spanish F4 will leave Spain for an intense June with two scoring events: the first in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, from June 6 to 8, and the second at Paul Ricard in France from June 20 to 22.
